It was a cold day by the Hudson River in New York, yesterday, but the three of us bundled up for some engagement shots. I am so thrilled to be able to shoot Margaret and Tuckers upcoming wedding in April, in South street sea port. It was also nice to see the progress at the World Trade Center, as I had not been down there in a while. Inspiring (both the couple and the progress)!

A big thank you to all the couples who I got to know this year! It has been a wonderful year, and as it comes to a close I reflect on the weddings, the couples, and how unique each one is. From the outdoor wedding by the river, to the shoreline's, and everything in-between--each one stands out to me and I am grateful I got to document them. I was honored to shoot Kate & Nils' wedding. Kate is a very distant cousin who shares my name, but that is a long story. It was a wonderful private ceremony at a private residence with just the four of us: Kate's daughter was the maid of honor, and Patrick, the bride and grooms good friend officiated. The love was palpable, worth waiting for (they dated for ten years). There were many tears of joy, a little dancing to the Kinks afterwards, followed by chilling out in the "gazebo", all with breathtaking views of the sound. Cheers Nil's & Kate. And thanks for kickin' up those cowboy boots (a little colorado for me).

I was so lucky to shoot Heather & David, I have known David for a while--since we both worked at the Litchfield County Times a long time ago. We have kept in touch, even after he moved back to the city. When he asked me to shoot their wedding, I was honored. Heather was so game for anything as far as pictures went. She happily tossed aside her shoes after the wedding and literally frolicked in the water. It was absolutely beautiful, metaphors and all. A Cinderella evening, including a real live prince charming (John) who stole Stephanie's heart at a math conference.... A real love story.

The two (both math teachers) met at a summer camp for math teachers, and so I hear, fell in love right away.

They married last night with their own fireworks show ( Stephanie welcomed the storm just moments before they got ready to walk down the rose petal aisle.)

Congratulations to the bride and Groom! What a gorgeous couple (inside and out) . Cheers to them both, to Jen who just graduated from business school in MI, moved across the country (back to the east coast), and finally planned a wedding, and pulled it all off with out a hitch. Even the sun shined on them. What a loving tribute from both the matron of honor, and best man for the two of them, it was a true testament to what wonderful family and friends they have! A quick "mini" shoot for the Klemm's today, and they were a vision in pink + gray...Natalie just turned three and she told me she celebrated with pink cupcakes, and shared her Elmo musical card her uncles gave her. I love being able to re-visit children and watch them grow. Last time I saw them her baby sister, Victoria was just born. I couldn't resist the pink antique toy car, with Natalie being a vision in her pretty pink dress with a bow. The first time I shot the family was when Natalie was three weeks old....

I was honored to be able to witness and photograph miss Madelyn Rose's baptism yesterday afternoon. I have been able to watch her grow over the last six months (and more if you count the belly pictures of the Conto clan). She was the picture of angelic; cried on cue, but only for a second, slept through some of it peacefully, and smiled widely as all the grandparents and family greeted her. She is such a beautiful little doll and loved by so many (big brothers too). Congratulations and much love!

Hooray! I got to shoot the Canning-Morgan clan again. It has been four years, since I first met them and shot their wedding, and then a year later began documenting their daughters birth. It has been so wonderful watching the family grow, and I feel so lucky to be able to document it. We shot at two locations this time; the Litchfield Green, and White Memorial, we lucked out and got the two hours of sunshine, on a mostly rainy day. Lucky us, lucky me.

A lot of Great friends, loads of cute kids, and a homemade wedding cake! Oh, yeah, and fireworks! They were up for anything as far as pictures go; a barefoot bride walking down to the river! It is raining here in Northwestern Connecticut. Need a reminder of color today. I will make another pot of coffee, light a fire, and keep fingers crossed for the 60 degree (sunny) day that we should have saturday, just in time for my wedding with J & I ; outdoors on a farm in Easton, CT.

Most stories don't really start with once upon a time. But this one kind of does! A beautiful early fall beach wedding could not have been more perfect--from the flowers, to the amazing food. but most importantly the bride and the groom; who met in the lunch room in 11th grade. Dated, went to college, didn't date, dated, fell in love, went to med school, lived a million miles apart. And these high school sweethearts sealed the deal! It really is a fairytale. {a few favorites from over the years}

How do you know when you get it right? You just do. Most of the time. Even before digital arrived, (when you can check and see if you got the shot). It is instinctual, it is part of being in the moment. Having taken pictures of brides now for almost fifteen years, I have to say that they don't just blend into on another (as one may think). Each, with their own personality, each that have left an impression on me. I have connected on a personal level with every one. I feel especially nostalgic about black and white. I spent years in the darkroom carefully unloading film in the dark room, watching it develop, handling each piece of paper gingerly with the tongs as I set it in the developer. Watching it emerge. I shot only in black and white film up until about five years ago. I only used color when asked by a bride. I guess with progress comes change. But I must say I miss the smell of stop bath. Thank you to all my unique and beautiful brides, for sharing their most important and memorable day with me. I feel honored.

Hello fall! After a brutal summer heat wave that lasted up until about a week or so ago, I welcome fall (just a officially a week away!) I spy an orange leaf, a ripe pumpkin, and a huge sunflower. I had a blast at the Bethlehem fair last weekend, treated myself to a deep fried Oreo (don't knock it till you try it). Hello fall, it's nice to see you again. I was so happy (and flattered) to take pictures for my long time friend, Mandy, and her now husband, Sami. Amongst family and friends, who came from all over the country to surround Amanda and Sami with support, love and a lot of laughter. A shout out to Melvin who rocked Mandy's hair, (and her chair). Many thanks to all who made this a great weekend, that I am sure will not be forgotten. Congratulations Mandy and Sami! a tree grows in brooklyn

A tree does indeed grow in Brooklyn. Taking a break from working a wedding, I actually got to attend one as a guest (congrats to my cousin Joe and his beautiful bride Janet). They got married at the botanic garden in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday. Since I was not working I left the heavy equipment at home and enjoyed myself, and snapped a few shots with my iphone (shake it app). The gardens are so beautiful, I want to go back! Often when editing I have a hard time deciding how I want the final image to look. I played with this one image that I took this past weekend on a boat outing out of Essex, Ma. to the back side of Crane's beach. I am always amazed how the different editing techniques can change the feel of a picture. It reminds me that it is not just the way you see things at the moment, but how you can play with and manipulate an image. Each one, evokes a different feeling. So I decided to post all three to compare. I can't choose a favorite, though I am leaning towards the first one, I like the nostalgic feel of it.

I have almost every color in my garden right now. Stay tuned for yellow, orange, purple, and green. Thanks to my great friend, Debra for finding this old CT milk bottle at a tag sale (in Ohio of all places) . And also thanks to Debra, for her patience almost ten years ago while shopping in Lisbon, Portugal for the blue and white dish towel I so treasure. I think I spent hours at that little shop. Everything has a story behind it. That is what I love about photography. P.S. in case you are wondering those are heirloom black beauty tomatoes.

it was a hot, hot, day in July

What is it about the American flag that screams summer in New England? I had these little flags in all the outdoor geranium pots set up for the fourth, and as I went to water them today, decided it was time to put them away, set them in my tag watering can, and boom, I had to get my camera. And it doesn't hurt that the lobelia in the back ground screams summer as well. I love these summer days, the kind where you wake up, put on your bathing suit, and don't take it off till sunset. When its acceptable to show up at the grocery store to pick up some odds and ends in a wet bathing suit, and no one thinks anything of it. I love that the neighbors linger longer at the mailbox to chat, I love that I can devour a book in a day (for some reason I read more and faster in the summer). I anticipate the latest version of Martha's Living, Real Simple, and Cooking Light, just so I can drink up all the photographs. We are not half way through summer, but I want to remember every little nuance. I want to cling to the feeling of eating a pint of chocolate ice cream for dinner (and not even feel guilty). Hello summer. I love you.

natalie gets a baby sister

Here are few shots from this mornings session. I had so much fun visiting with Natalie, and her new baby sister Victoria this morning. I took Natalie's first pictures when she was three weeks old (two and a half years ago), and was happy to return for the third time to shoot Natalie holding her new baby sister at four weeks old. There is nothing I love more then documenting children as they grow, and building a relationship with clients (who become friends) over the years. Thanks for allowing me into your home and documenting Victoria's welcome into the world, and congratulations on a new girl in the family!

Some people ask me why it is I started wanting to photograph people. Growing up, our apartment in New York City, the walls were covered with pictures on every wall, in every corner of the house, the hallways were lined with these old black and white portraits, (long, long hallways, if you have ever seen a pre-war apartment in New York City you know what I am talking about). I loved looking at the black and white images. Of course every picture tells a story, but for me it wasn't just the story, it was the fact that these images always made me want to know what the conversations were, and I loved that very few of them were posed, or staged. They seemed of the moment, and candid, before it was a catch phrase. Both my grandfathers were amateur photographers. My paternal grandfather; more serious about his art, he was a painter, a photographer, and a furniture designer. I was sorry I never knew him. I do know him through his art,which hangs in my home studio today. My Maternal grandfather is the one who taught me about cameras. The first camera I played with was his old Pentex, and I still have it. These images , what we now call, "lifestyle" photographs, are my inspiration. I chose the few that spoke to me (or that I already had scanned). My grandfather (except for the few he was in) took all these pictures. I think my great grandfather (pictured) took the rest.

Snapshots of Cape Ann

Cranes beach in Ipswich Mass was slightly damaged by the storm that hit it last fall, but its beauty is still breathtaking; a vast expanse of preserve along the north shore of Mass, AKA Cape Ann.
The dunes are protected by the preserve, along the dunes is a marked trail you can hike for hours along. It is a must do if ever there!

Rockport MA, just a twenty five minute drive up north, past Gloucester, is a quaint seaside port, speckled with back alleys leading to the water, art galleries, and plenty of saltwater taffy.
Private residences, tucked into alleys right on the water....

Rockport harbor, taken with my "shake it" app, and then Photoshoped. I am amazed what you can do with a 2 megapixel camera, an iphone, and a beautiful place. Taking a vacation from lugging around all my equipment, enjoying the scenery, was fun, but next time I am bringing my Nikon.

Butterflies and flowers

This past weekend I shot some pictures at a private estate and garden. It motivated me to get out in my own back yard and shoot some pictures of the flowers that are popping up now. My first tree peony flower has opened. Very excited about that. I came across the swallowtail butterfly sucking on the Korean lilac, and it didn't seem to mind that I got up close and personal. A "off " day today, I will plant some more annuals in pots for the terrace. Do I smell summer just around the corner?

I love working in black and white portraiture. I used to only shoot black and white film. So working with bright bold images is a departure for me--and I love it in the middle of January. I had so much fun manipulating these images. And it is nice to get a shot of bright colors in the winter, when everything seems to be black, gray, and white. All the images are original flower images that I then played around with on Photoshop.

Food

Writers block began early yesterday morning. I had been struggling with what my next article for the Examiner should be. So instead of trolling on-line for ideas, I started with what I know best: food and taking pictures. The pictures that captured my attention this morning were all of cakes…And that is how I came to writing: Let Them eat cake (and Candy). I then scanned through some of my favorite food pictures. I have always been known as somewhat of a foodie, although I despise the term. My close group of friends called us the porker club, in college. It just meant that we loved food. It stuck, and the five of us still gather together from across the globe annually to enjoy in a weekend of food, laughter and friendship. The food may have changed since college, but we each in our own right are foodies. Food brings people together. It is beautiful and can create memories. Or maybe it is just the foodies who remember weekends that are defined by, “We had lobster on The Cape” or, “was that in Chicago where we found that cupcake place?” or “that was the weekend we ate gourmet ice cream by the spoonfuls in Columbus, Ohio?” Could there be a better way to ring in 2010 then with pictures of food? I thought not... Happy New Year!

Eco-Chic

Eco Chic weddings came to me through research for a series of articles I have been writing for the wedding-style section of the on line paper, the examiner. I knew about planning a green wedding, but recently came across the beautiful website www.ecochicweddings.com. It has fabulous ideas; from buying your wedding (vintage) dress to decor, floral arrangements, and other insider tips, which support green, sustainable products. After writing an article about planning an Eco-chic wedding, I went through some older images from previous weddings that have some beautiful ideas for Eco-chic floral arrangements. I love the recycled glass jars to use as candle holders, paired with the blue hydrangea (courtesy of Dirt).

Recently I have been writing editorials for a local on line paper. It has given me a lot of pause-- time to think about the twenty years I have experienced observing through my lens the vows a person takes in front of their loved ones. It is a beautiful thing, whether scripted or not. It had me thinking about the few times that I actually shed a tear behind that lens—and it was always those unscripted moments (the ones that catch you off guard) when a bride or groom wrote their own vows. Here are a few shots from various weddings of couples in the midst of saying their vows.

Look what a day can do. I thought I would update the blog with the new snowfall. In the last few days the blanket of snow changed everything. Only nature could produce this kind of beauty. Shortly after,in January,they trimmed the trees and the apples were gone. I have never seen red apples clinging on till December. I was praying for snowfall the day prior, thinking how beautiful it would be to capture the red apples, the grey/brown of bark, and the white snow. And it paid off. Who said there is no Santa Claus?

December snuck in. With out snow, with out warning, and on a 65 degree day I wandered down the road with my camera, and was struck by both the beauty and the starkness of the orchard near my home. The apples still dangling from the bare trees, it was both beautiful and odd, as nature can be. As autumn turns to official winter in a few weeks, I am still not ready for the change. But seeing the apples, hanging in there as long as they can, reminds me that winter is not far. So it was nice to be able to get out with my camera and enjoy what may be one of the last days before winter strikes us. If you get the chance to visit March farms, it is a family run and operated farm, with fruit and berry picking all season, and during the holidays you can buy homemade pies (made by Mrs. March) and wander around. As people flocked up North for the long weekend, to go leaf peeping, and camping, I fled to the seashore. I have always looked forward to October 1st, which is the first day most beaches on the East Coast allow dogs on the beach. My golden retriever, Ruby, is a swimmer, and loves running in the vast expansive sands at Crane. With 2,100 acres of beach, Crane beach is managed for conservation – people and ecology – through careful planning. There is more then a five-mile stretch of trails that wind through coastal dunes, which shield inland areas from storm waves and flooding. And, Castle Neck is the site of the North Shore’s largest pitch pine forest. Crane Beach is also among the world’s most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened bird that was nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century for its eggs and feathers.

Being on the beach in the off-season to me, feels like a secret that no one really knows about. It feeds my soul. And those who share that secret with me understand the beauty and complexity of the beach in the off-season.Here are some images, of both the beach, and the trails that lead to the top of the dunes...these photos do not capture the vast expanse of sand dunes, and the long stretches of sand. I am especially drawn to the seaside, or any water for that matter. That, coupled with childhood memories of visiting with my grandfather who sometimes kept his boat there, made Cassie and Rob’s wedding at Mystic Seaport both exquisite and sentimental for me. Every detail, from the carefully put together welcome bags at the hotel, to the delicate arrangements of delphiniums hanging from a French flower bucket, to the miniature cupcakes (yes the ones pictured were the red velvet, my personal favorite). As I dip my toes into the world of social networking, I now know it is time to bite the bullet and create a blog. So here I am!

about me...
I grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I have always seen the world through a camera lens. Coming from an incredibly creative family of writers and artists, I was lucky enough to have a family that fostered my love of photography at a young age. The visual documentation of life, marriage, babies, and family has always moved me. Home, and the simple moments are the most captivating to me. With a degree in art, and twenty years working as a photojournalist, I would describe my approach and vision as one of an organic nature, with an affinity for fluid, un-scripted moments. I am a boutique operation, emphasizing attention to detail and personal one–on-one attention. I shoot each wedding myself. Based out of Litchfield County, CT, I serve the greater New England and New York City area, and am also available for destination weddings.
